I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water valve for your home. If you are unable to locate a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

In the meantime, start mopping up any water, position a container to catch drips, and remove valuable possessions from the area. If the house water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
